Minister of Justice, Prisons Affairs and Constitutional Reform Vijayadasa Rajapaksa said that preparations are being made to pass about 15 very important laws in the next few weeks.
The Minister also mentioned that in the last 18 months, about 75 bills have been submitted and passed in the Parliament and the basic changes required by the country have been made.
Minister Vijayadasa Rajapaksa said this at a press conference held today (12) at the Presidential Media Centre.
Minister Vijayadasa Rajapaksa who further commented here,
“This period can be referred to as a period of major legal reforms in the judicial structure of our country, related to administration of justice. In the last 18 months, around 75 bills have been introduced and passed in Parliament. It should be noted that this will help bring about a fundamental change in the country.
Also, anti-corruption laws have been passed by the government to prevent bribery, fraud, corruption, commission taking etc. in the public sector as well as in the private sector. It has been prepared to comply with the United Nations Anti-Corruption Charter. Accordingly, the Bribery and Corruption Commission has been given many powers and independence. It should also be noted that new offenses have been introduced in relation to sports and sexual bribery.
Moreover, the law relating to assets and liabilities, which was nominal, has now reached a stable position. Therefore, all citizens of the country should submit statements regarding their assets and liabilities to the Bribery and Corruption Commission. They regularly monitor asset liability reports. Also, new laws have been prepared regarding disposal of case materials and drugs.
Also, an authority has been set up to investigate the assets obtained through criminal activities.
Also, an amendment to the Primary Litigation Act has been submitted. A new law on marriage has also been introduced. Further, the Cabinet has authorized the amendment of the Bill to introduce only generally acceptable changes in relation to the Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act.
Also, many issues have arisen regarding the Khadi court. Accordingly, two changes are proposed. Similarly, a draft on enforcement of foreign court judgments dealing with foreign court judgments has been submitted.
And preparations are being made to pass about 15 very important laws in the next few weeks. Several amendments have also been proposed in the Criminal Procedure Code. Also, the recently passed Hydrological Act may be implemented next year. Through this, more than 50 million dollars can be earned from ships traveling through the country’s maritime borders.” He further informed.
