Chennai : Adal song program should not be denied on the grounds of election conduct rules – Madras High Court.
Even though the Lok Sabha elections are over in Tamil Nadu, as the elections in other states will be held till June 1, the Election Commission of Tamil Nadu has informed that the election procedure rules will be in force till June 4 when the election results will be announced. However, it was also said that vehicle checks will continue only in state border areas.
In this situation, an incident has taken place in Villupuram where the police have banned the performance of dance and song at the village festival citing the norms of election conduct. As a result, the Madras High Court has issued a fresh order to the concerned police station.
Pulp pouring festival is going to be held at Mariamman temple in old Marakanam area of Melmalayanur taluk of Villupuram district. In view of this, on May 18, permission was requested from the temple administration at Valathi Police Station to hold a dance program on behalf of the temple.
But the Valathi police station denied permission for the Mariamman temple dance program on the grounds that the election code of conduct was in force. After this Kesavan filed a case in Madras High Court.
The case came up for hearing before a bench of Justice Kumaresh Babu. At that time, the government gave an explanation that permission was denied because the election process was in force. After listening to the arguments of both sides, the judge said that even after the election, it is not acceptable to deny permission to a program like Adal Song on the grounds of election code of conduct.
Moreover, Madras High Court Judge Kumaresh Babu ordered the Villupuram District Valadhi Police Station to grant proper permission to conduct dance and song programs in the temple festival under the existing law.
