Calves separating mother elephant – Govts response order
The Madras High Court has directed the central and state governments to respond to a petition filed against the inclusion of cubs separated from the mother elephant with other elephant herds.
In a petition filed by Chennai-based animal welfare activist Muralitharan, there have been incidents of mother elephants being separated from their cubs in recent times. The forest department is trying to place these cubs with other herds of elephants. The late elephant expert Ajay Desai is said to have said that there is only a 5 per cent chance of another herd joining the cubs.
So instead of reuniting baby elephants separated from their mother with another elephant herd, four or five baby elephants should be brought together and released back into the wild.
Similarly, the petition has requested that the tiger cub found in the Valparai area should be reared in the land and released into the forest in the required amount so that it can hunt on its own, and the Tamil Nadu government should be ordered to establish a modern medical facility with internationally trained veterinarians to treat and rehabilitate the wild animals.
A bench of Justices Satish Kumar and Bharatha Chakraborty, which heard the case, ordered the central and state governments to respond.

Also, Muralitharan had filed a petition demanding that an environmental impact assessment should be done on the 38 routes declared as elephant corridors in Tamil Nadu, an elephant rehabilitation center should be set up in Sativayal area of Coimbatore, and a ban should be placed on the construction of the Tamil Nadu Technology City.
A bench of Justices Satish Kumar and Bharatha Chakvarthy has ordered the central and state governments to respond to this petition as well.
