The special gazette which had been issued stating that plantation workers should be paid Rs 1,700 per day has been cancelled.

The employers’ association did not participate in the 2 rounds of talks organized last April to discuss the daily wages of plantation workers. In this situation, a gazette was issued by the Industrial Commissioner on April 30, fixing the daily salary for plantation workers at 1,700 rupees.

Following this, the Secretary of the Ministry of Industry and Local Employment, R. P. A. Vimalaweera, issued another special gazette with effect from 21st May. In this gazette, it was mentioned that plantation workers should be paid a basic salary of Rs 1,350 and a special allowance of Rs 350 per day.

Accordingly, the Secretary of the Ministry of Industry and Rural Employment had announced that the plantation workers would get a total payment of Rs 1,700 per day.

It was mentioned in the special gazette issued by him on 21st May that the rate of 80 rupees per kilogram of extra fat should be paid.

However, it is to be noted that the Secretary of the Ministry of Industry and Local Employment, R. P. A. Vimalaweera, has issued another special gazette announcing the cancellation of the notification published by him in the Gazette of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka on May 21st.
