The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the state governments to respond in the Sanatana Dharma case against Udayanidhi.
In September 2023, Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, who participated in the “Sanadana Abolition Conference” organized by the Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers’ Association in Chennai, said that Sanathan should be abolished like dengue and malaria.
Udhayanidhi’s speech sparked protests in various states across India. Cases were filed against Udhayanidhiti in various states like Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
Also, 262 members of the Bar Council, including retired judges, had written to the Supreme Court saying that he had spoken offensively to religious sentiments and that appropriate action should be taken against him. The letter urged the Supreme Court to take action on its own initiative.
A hearing on these demands is going on before a bench comprising Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Deepankar Dutta. In it, the case has been adjourned by issuing an order that the respective state governments should give an explanation regarding the complaints filed against Udayanidhi in various states.
