‘Sudden’ floods in Trichy… Explanation given by Tamil Nadu government.!

Trichy Kollidam River

Trichy: Due to the southwest monsoon in the catchment areas of the Cauvery river, the water flow in the Cauvery river has increased and most of the dams are filling up. Similarly, the river in Trichy Thiruvanaikaval Kollid is full and overflowing with flood water.

Explanation regarding the damage to the construction of Trichy – Kollidam high level flyover due to flash floods. A small barrage was constructed near the Napier Bridge on the Kollid River to prevent soil erosion. And that particular part was damaged. It is also noteworthy that the high power tower near the Kollidam River also collapsed due to soil erosion.

The Tamil Nadu government has given an explanation about the floods in Cauvery river. Out of which, construction of a high-level bridge with 24 spans of 792 meters length was carried out under the Integrated Road Infrastructure Development Project in 2014-15 across the river Kollidam on Chennai-Trichy-Dindigul road under the control of Trichy Highways Department.

In the last 2018, the huge flood in Kaveri was diverted into the Kollid River, and the eye 18 19 of the old iron bridge parallel to the bridge was damaged and washed away. Sand erosion has occurred up to the ground piers under pier 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 of the new bridge and soil erosion has occurred to a depth of two to four meters.

In order to prevent this and to improve the stability of the bridge, administrative permission was given on 19.5.2020 through a new service project to build a bed protection wall for a length of 800 meters at an estimate of Rs. A 300 meter RCC retaining wall is next to it. A 492 meter PCC retaining wall was also constructed.

Currently due to monsoon rains in the state of Karnataka due to heavy rains there has been flooding in Cauvery river. One lakh fifty thousand cubic feet of water from Mettur Dam has been released on night of 31.07.2024 due to high inflow.

Due to the sudden high water flow being diverted into the river, it is seen that the earthen retaining wall erected near the bridge has been moved slightly upwards in the area between the bridge eye 22 and 23 of approximately 30 meters.

It is not possible to fully know the current condition of the affected Mandhang wall due to the continuous increase in water flow. Further, the Tamil Nadu government has explained that the details of the affected retaining wall will be known only after the water flow subsides.
