Bihar: A river bridge in use across Kandaki river in Saran district collapsed.
Collapsing bridges have become a recurring story in the state of Bihar in recent days. So far, while the news of 10 bridges collapsing in the last 15 days has been hyped, questions are being raised strongly about the quality of buildings in the state.
Already, while a 150-year-old bridge collapsed in Saran district yesterday, a part of the bridge built 15 years ago across the Kandaki River in the same district has caused a shock.
More than 50 villages are without transport links due to the collapse of a bridge across the Kandaki river, connecting the villages of Saraiya and Satua.
A senior district government official inspecting the spot and speaking to reporters later said that the bridge was built 15 years ago. The exact cause of the bridge collapse is still unknown. At present, the work of removing the collapsed bridge parts from the river is being carried out in the first phase, he said.
State Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has issued an important announcement regarding the recent spate of bridge collapse accidents. Bihar has appointed a committee to study the quality of newly constructed bridges and the current construction status as well as the quality of old bridges across the state and submit a report.
Since June 18, 10 bridges have collapsed in Kishanganj, Araria, East Champaran, Madhubani, Sivan and Saran in Bihar.
