Southwest Monsoon usually starts in Kerala in early June. As far as Tamil Nadu is concerned, the North-East Monsoon brings more rainfall, but only if the South-West Monsoon rains adequately, the dams of Tamil Nadu will fill up. So the farmers of Tamil Nadu will expect more southwest monsoon.

Southwest Monsoon plays an important role not only in the agricultural production of Tamil Nadu but also in the agricultural production of India. During the four months from June to September, many large dams are filled due to this monsoon. So it is important that the monsoons start at the right time and give good rainfall.

Usually on 1st June Southwest Monsoon starts in Kerala. It started late last year on June 8th. But the Indian Meteorological Department has announced that this season will start earlier i.e. on May 31.

The announcement was made by Mrityunjay Mohapatra, Director of the Indian Meteorological Department. Its onset date will play an important role in tracking the journey of Southwest Monsoon across the country. It is expected to get a break from the intense summer heat as it moves north.
