AIIMS in Madurai:
In December 2018, the central government approved the construction of AIIMS Hospital in Madurai on an area of 222 acres to provide the best medical facility to Tamil Nadu. Following this, in January 2019, Prime Minister Modi laid the foundation stone for the construction of AIIMS Hospital with a project estimate of Rs 1264 crore.
AIIMS Hospital Facilities:
The AIIMS hospital in Madurai is said to be a pioneer in its field of clinical education and research.
The hospital will have 950 beds with ten tracks on the ground floor.
Constantly delayed construction work:
Announced in 2018, this Madurai AIIMS hospital has been without construction for more than five years with just a perimeter wall.
Various reasons were attributed to the delay in the control works, such as problems in land acquisition, delay in getting credit from the Japanese company, and increase in the budget amount.
82℅ Lending Japan Company:
Japan-based JICA is providing 82 percent of the matching budget for the construction of the hospital. The central government has accepted the remaining 18 percent.
Tender Final:
Following this, the master plan for Madurai AIIMS Hospital was finalized and L&T got the contract and set a target to complete these works in 33 months and started the construction work last March with Vastu Puja.
Environmental clearance:
In this situation, on May 2, the AIDS administration applied to the Tamil Nadu Environment Department for environmental clearance for the construction work. On the 10th, the environmental expert assessment committee recommended to the Tamil Nadu government that environmental clearance may be granted with certain important conditions.
Key Terms:
In Madurai AIIMS, a structure to convert waste into bio-gas for use in hospital and canteen cooking, a structure for proper disposal of medical waste, a quality oxygen production center, a rainwater drainage facility, a children’s play area, a facility for charging electric vehicles, a sewage treatment structure, a no-reuse of single-use plastic items, and for victims of the Sivakasi Virudhunagar blast. The AIIMS management has been directed to ensure that a high level burn care unit is provided for immediate treatment.
Tamil Govt Permission:
After this, following the approval of the State Environmental Expert Assessment Committee, the Tamil Nadu government has given an environmental permit for the construction work of Madurai AIIMS Hospital.
