Petition for Suspension of Presidential Election; Five judges to consider

A five-member High Court panel headed by the Chief Justice has been named to consider a fundamental rights violation petition filed in the High Court seeking an interim injunction to stop the holding of the presidential election.

Accordingly, the said petition will be considered on the coming Monday (08) in the presence of the said court panel consisting of five members.

Following the decision of the High Court to consider the fundamental rights petition submitted by businessman Samindra Dayan Lenava regarding the tenure of the President, the High Court has decided to consider it before a panel of five judges.

Accordingly, Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya, Vijith Malalkoda, Murtu Penando, Preethi Padman Surasena, S. Five justices, Durairaja, are named in this book.

A further request has been made in the relevant petition that an order should be issued to prevent the holding of the forthcoming presidential election until the High Court gives an explanation regarding the dates of the end of the term of office of the President as per the Constitution.

Meanwhile, President Ranil Wickramasinghe stated in a media statement issued today (04) that the term of office of the President is 5 years and his position is that the decision of the Election Commission to hold the presidential election in 2024 is correct.

In addition, the Presidential Media Unit had indicated that President Ranil Wickramasinghe had stated that Samindra Dayan Lenava did not consult with him or his lawyers before filing a petition in the High Court regarding the tenure of the President.
