Gotabaya Rajapaksa wins Sri Lanka’s 2019 election as president. In 2022, following a severe economic crisis in Sri Lanka, people protested against the government. Following this, the President of Sri Lanka, Rajapaksa and the Prime Minister resigned.

Ranil Wickramasinghe was sworn in as the new president and Dinesh Gunawardena as the prime minister. A general election is going to be held for this country.

In this case, it has been officially announced that the Sri Lankan presidential election will be held on September 21. Election Commission of Sri Lanka has announced that nominations will be accepted on August 15. Sarath Fonseka, who was the army chief during the last phase of war in Sri Lanka, is contesting this election.

Current President Ranil Wickremesinghe is also going to contest in this election. 72-year-old Ranil Wickremesinghe was sworn in as president in July 2022. Ranil Wickramasinghe’s regime was watched by the world while Sri Lanka was suffering from severe financial crisis. Ranil Wickramasinghe is credited with repairing Sri Lankan economy which was in shambles.

Ranil Wickremesinghe brought inflation down from 70% in September 2022 to 1.7% in June, strengthened the rupee and rebuilt previously depleted foreign exchange reserves. In this case, Sri Lanka’s presidential election has created great expectations. Nearly 17 million of Sri Lanka’s population of 22 million are reported to be eligible to vote.
