Bilateral talks between President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who have gone to New Delhi for the swearing-in ceremony of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, were held today (10) morning. At the same time, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh mentioned the above.
President Ranil Wickramasinghe also agreed to send a team of Sri Lankan agricultural experts to Bangladesh to study the agricultural modernization program implemented in Bangladesh based on the cooperative system and to make Sri Lanka’s agricultural modernization program a success.
The two leaders also discussed the signing of a free trade agreement between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka and President Ranil Wickremesinghe indicated that there are chances of signing a free trade agreement with Bangladesh after the completion of the India Free Trade Agreement.
The Prime Minister of Bangladesh also promised President Ranil Wickremesinghe to provide opportunities for Bangladeshi private investors to invest in Sri Lanka.
During the meeting attention was also paid to the passenger ferry service between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh invited President Ranil Wickremesinghe to participate in the BIMSTEC conference in Bangladesh. The President informed that Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena and Foreign Minister Ali Sabri will participate in the conference as the period of the conference is due to elections in Sri Lanka.
The President also assured the Prime Minister of Bangladesh that he would visit Bangladesh after the elections.
Commenting on the meeting, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that she is very happy that Sri Lanka’s economy has been restored under the leadership of President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
Recalling the support received from Bangladesh and India for economic recovery, President Nil Wickramasinghe expressed his gratitude for it.
