Deaths from counterfeiting; Report by July 3: Court order

Kallakurichi | Madras High Court | The Tamil Nadu government has given time till July 3 to file a status report on the action taken by the police in the Kallakurichi Kallacharaya case. Chennai The High Court has ordered.

Acting Chief Justice (ACJ) R. Mahadevan and Justice Mohammad Shafique accepted Advocate General PS Raman’s request for a week’s time to file a reply in two cases seeking investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

AIADMK Legal Wing Secretary I.S. Inpadurai and Bamaka advocate K. Balu had filed two PILs. Senior Advocate V. Raghavachari and N.L. Raja appeared on behalf of the petitioners.

Meanwhile, the A-G told the court that the Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department (CB-CIT) had conducted a speedy investigation, arrested the main culprits and found the source of the fake methanol, opposing the plea seeking a CBI probe into the tragedy.

On June 19 and June 20, at least 38 people died in Karunapuram of Kallakurichi district after allegedly consuming liquor on the following days. In this case, the number of victims has increased to 63 today. 6 of them are women. One is a person with disabilities. Meanwhile, 74 of those who were treated returned home.
