Belgium: Belgian man with autosomal recessive disorder freed from Drink and Drive case
Nowadays many people are diagnosed with new rare diseases by medical experts. In that way, doctors have discovered that a person in Belgium has a rare disease called auto brewery syndrome (ABS).
A 40-year-old man from Belgium was booked for drunk driving and later acquitted by the court. Because the person is said to be suffering from auto-brewery syndrome, which causes his body to secrete alcohol automatically.
The man, who is suffering from a rare disease, was examined by three doctors and confirmed to be suffering from ABS. Lisa Florin, a clinical biologist at the Belgian hospital AZ Sint-Lucas, said that the body of those suffering from such a rare disease automatically secretes alcohol.
But the effects are less felt by the victims. Abs is not present at birth, but is a rare condition that develops when a person suffers from a bowel-related disorder. He said the disease ferments carbohydrates in the stomach, raising blood ethanol levels and causing symptoms of intoxication.
Because of this, the judge said in the judgment of the case that the person accused in the Drink and Drive case had no symptoms of intoxication. As a result, the Bruges Police Court immediately released the man.
