Relatives of a man who died after surgery at the Colombo National Hospital have accused the doctor who performed the surgery of being responsible for his death.
Although a doctor said that the person in question had died due to severe bleeding, the surgeon said that the nerve had been punctured by something.
In November 2023, 41-year-old Sanjana Rajapaksa, a father of three, who lived in Medirigiya met with an accident.
Due to this the left hand has become numb. To get treatment for this, he went to a private hospital in Kandy and when he met a doctor, it was suggested that he should undergo a surgery because of a fractured nerve.
The doctor mentioned that a surgery in a private hospital would cost around 15 lakh rupees and if done in a government hospital there would be a long waiting list.
Accordingly, he, a father of three, underwent surgery at the Colombo National Hospital on July 22.
After this surgery, he lost consciousness, his condition deteriorated day by day and his brain began to die, and the doctors said that they would remove the ventilator as they could not save the patient.
Sanjana’s wife has sent a letter to the Director of the Colombo National Hospital and the Ministry of Health stating that her husband died due to the doctor’s negligence.
However, as the post-mortem report of the deceased is yet to be released, it is reported that the coroner has announced that his body will be cremated.
