Coimbatore, elephants have been camping in the rural areas of Thondamuthur district along the Western Ghats for the past few months. A single wild elephant, two and herds are encroaching on the area causing damage to lives, property and agricultural land. As a result, the people of the area have lost their livelihoods and are living in fear every day.

Two wild elephants, which have been wreaking havoc in the area for the past few days, chased the person in the vehicle and shouted and tried to attack the residents of the nearby house. They drank water from the water tank in front of the house, chased and attacked the husband and wife who went for walking training, and destroyed the fodder kept for the cows in the agricultural fields in the area, causing damage to the crops there.

It was constantly involved in such incidents. In this case, it attacked the 55-year-old priest Bhaskaran at Perumal Temple in Viraliyur near Thondamuthur at 8 pm yesterday.

His two legs were injured. Alpha team of the forest department rushed to the spot on the information given by the local people. And as this information spread to the general public of the area, they flocked there. In a tense situation where the people of the village gather together and drive the elephant to the forest area with the forest department, a woman who was there says to the elephant “Go Sami Go, Pilliyarappa Go”.

It is expected by all that the forest department should take steps to send them to the forest area permanently before the wild elephants camping in the area cause any loss of life.
