Hyundai has stopped selling the Kona electric car model in India five years after its launch. The Kona electric car was first launched in India in July 2019. The next-generation Kona electric cars are currently on sale in overseas automobile markets.
The Kona Electric is the first electric SUV launched in India. This car was released at an ex-showroom price of around Rs.25 lakh. But after the arrival of this car, various car manufacturers including Tata, MG and Mahindra launched new electric SUV models at a lower price than the Kona Electric.
Before the Nexon EV, ZS EV and XUV 400 electric SUVs, the Kona Electric looks a bit more expensive. Hyundai sold this electric car in CKD (Completely Knocked Down) method in India. Therefore, the company could not reduce its price beyond a certain extent. In the end it was sold with a discount of up to Rs 2 lakh, but customers did not come forward to buy this electric car.
So, now Hyundai has stopped the sale of this car. The Kona Electric model has been removed from Hyundai India’s website. Hyundai has sold 2,329 Kona electric cars in India since its launch and before its discontinuation.
Hyundai will soon launch the Creta EV model in India. That could also be a reason for the Kona Electric model to be discontinued. It seems that Hyundai will no longer launch the next-generation Kona Electric model in India, which is sold in other countries. As the company plans to manufacture the Creta EV entirely in India, Hyundai will be able to launch the electric car at a competitive price point with other companies’ electric SUV models.
Hyundai used a 39.2kWh lithium-ion battery pack in the Kona Electric model. This battery pack gives a range of 452 km. Also, the Kona Electric has an electric motor that can churn out 136hp of power and 395Nm of torque. It is noteworthy that Hyundai is expected to use this electric motor and battery pack in the new Creta electric car.
