After Tata Motors in India, Mahindra is the most focused on electric vehicles. The company had announced two electric vehicle plans in India last year. First is to develop electric variants of their petrol cars already on sale and second is to develop new electric cars with new designs and designs from scratch.

Mahindra is developing various new electric cars under both these schemes. It has been revealed that the company is testing the near-production models XUV.e8 and XUV.e9 in India. More importantly, these electric cars were caught in a spyshot while they were being tested on the Coimbatore-Salem National Highway.

The XUV.e9 will be the flagship model of the Mahindra XUV.e line-up. It seems that this electric car will be powered by electric motors capable of reaching a top speed of 200 kmph. The boomerang-shaped DRLs featured on the recently launched Mahindra XUV 3XO can also be seen on this new electric car. The headlights are independent and not connected to the central light bar. Overall the XUV.e9 has an aggressive look.

The interior of the new electric car is reminiscent of the XUV 700 model. Along with two 10.25-inch displays, the front-seat passenger gets a 10.25-inch touchscreen display. It also gets a two-spoke steering wheel similar to the one on Tata’s Nexon and Punch EV electric cars.

The new electric car is expected to be powered by a 60kWh to 80kWh battery pack. It is also expected that the XUV.e9 will be available as a model with a range of up to 600 km with single or dual electric motor options. The introduction of this new electric vehicle is expected to be the next step for Mahindra in its efforts to popularize electric vehicles in India and globally.
