Metro Rail Service
Metro rail service was launched in Chennai in 2015. Millions of people travel daily in the Metro, which plays an important role in Chennai’s public transport. It has been well received by the public as it can come and go without congestion.
Phase I Metro
In Chennai, the first phase of metro rail service is in operation on 2 lines covering a distance of 54 km. Considering the increasing number of passengers, the second phase of the metro rail project is being implemented.
Phase 2 Metro
Metro trains will be operated on three routes namely Madhavaram Dairy – Sirucherry Chipgat, Lighthouse – Poontamalli Workhouse, Madhavaram Dairy – Choshinganallur. At a cost of Rs.63,246 crores, the 2nd phase of metro works for a distance of 116 kms is in full swing. Metro works are going on vigorously to connect all major places of Chennai.
Metro Station
At this stage, the construction of additional 40 escalators in the first phase of metro stations has started. The metro administration has informed that steps are being taken to construct additional escalators and lift facilities in the metro stations where the number of passengers is high.
Additional escalators
Accordingly, 40 more escalators are planned to be constructed in 10 metro stations including Egmore, Tirumangalam, Anna Nagar, Alandur, Koyambedu, TMS, Ayurvelakku and companies have been selected for this purpose.
When will the work be completed?
Officials of the Chennai Metro Rail Company said that while the work has already started, the work will be completed in the next six months and will be brought to public use.
