A seven member committee led by a Major General has been appointed by the Sri Lanka Army to investigate the tragic accident that happened during the ‘Fox Hill Super Cross 2024’ racing event at Diyatalawa in which seven people were killed. The committee is headed by Major General Rohitha Aluvihare, Security Forces Headquarters (Central) Commander and includes two Brigadiers, two Colonels, one Lieutenant Colonel and a Major.
The other members of the committee are Brigadier Chaminda Lokugalappathi (Gemunu Regiment), Brigadier Kolonnagahapitiya (122 Light Infantry), Col. Karunaratne (Buttala Army College), Col.Karunaratne (Commando Training School) and Lt.Col.Marasinghe (CO, 1st Gemunu Regiment). A statement issued by the Army headquarters said the committee will submit its findings to the Army Commander.
The committee has been tasked with determining the causes of the accident, identifying responsible parties, whether adequate safety measures had been taken for spectators, whether the responsible parties had taken adequate measures to ensure the racing track’s quality and recommendations to prevent such accidents in the future.
Seven people including an 8-year-old girl lost their lives and more than 20 were injured on Sunday (21) after a car ran off the track during a race and ploughed into spectators.
Among the deceased were three event officials who had been stationed as flag marshals. The others were identified as spectators.
Two drivers of the racing cars involved in the accident were subsequently arrested and remanded until April 30 on the orders of the Court. The Fox Hill Super Cross was organized by the Sri Lanka Military Academy, Diyatalawa with the support of the Sri Lanka Automobile Sports (SLAS).
