Liquor sales through state-owned Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) have crossed Rs 45,000 crore in 2023-24. Housing and Urban Development Minister S. Muthuswamy, who holds the additional portfolio of Prohibition and Prohibition, said in the State Legislative Assembly, “Sales have increased from Rs 44,121.13 crore in 2022-23. 45,855.67 crore in 2023-24. Revenue from liquor sales is increasing every year,” he said.
Accordingly, it increased from Rs.33,133.24 crore in 2019-20 to Rs.33,811.15 crore in 2020-21 and over Rs.2,500 crore to Rs.36,050.65 crore in 2021-22. The revenue has increased due to the recent price hike announced by the state government.
Further, Muthuswamy said that in the financial year 2023-24, sales of Rs 45,855.67 crore have been generated through the sale of liquor through 4,829 liquor retail outlets. This is to be used for various welfare schemes of the state government.
Tasmac is one of the highest revenue earners for the government. Tamil Nadu Tasmac has 4,829 retail outlets and 2,919 bars. With this, a revenue of Rs.45,855.67 crore has been generated from the sale of liquor in the year 2023-24. This includes ₹35,081.39 crore in VAT and ₹10,774.28 crore in excise revenue, the Tamil Nadu government said in the Legislative Assembly on Friday.
