The metro train service introduced in Chennai in 2015 has been well received by the people. Chennai Metro Rail occupies an important position in public transport. The number of passengers is increasing day by day.
Metro Rail Service
Phase 1 metro rail service in Chennai is in operation on 2 lines covering a distance of 54 km. Now considering the increasing number of passengers, the second phase of the metro rail project is being implemented.
Phase 2 Metro
As the second phase, the Chennai Metro Rail project is planned to be completed with 116.1 km length in 3 more lines. Metro trains will be operated on three routes namely Madhavaram Dairy – Sirucherry Chipgat, Lighthouse – Poontamalli Workhouse, Madhavaram Dairy – Choshinganallur. The construction work for this is going on in full swing.
Adyar
At this stage, the work of constructing a tunnel at a depth of 56 feet under the river Adyar on the metro line between Chennai Madhavaram and Sirusheri is going on in full swing. The route will have 28 subway metro stations and 19 elevated metro stations.
Tunnel
Construction of tunnel from Greenway Road to Adyar Junction is underway. The 2nd mining machine is working at a depth of about 56 feet under the river Adyar. The machine is expected to reach Adyar junction next month.
