Yoga at the Asian Games? Proposed by Indian Olympic Association President PT Usha

The 2024 Olympic Games will be held in Paris from July 26 to August 11. Following this, the 2028 Olympics will be held in Los Angeles, USA, and 2032 in Brisbane, Australia.

In this case, India is showing interest in hosting the 2036 Olympics. The Union Sports Ministry is working hard to prepare the arrangements for this. Meanwhile, the ‘Mission Olympic Cell’ under the Union Sports Ministry is planning to recommend T20 Cricket, Kabaddi, Chess, Squash and Go Go for inclusion in the 2036 Olympics.

While India is exploring the possibility of adding yoga as a new sport to the 2036 Olympics if it wins the hosting rights for the 2036 Olympics, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) is taking steps to include yoga in the Asian Games.

IOA President PT Usha, in a letter to Olympic Council of Asia President Raja Randhir Singh, urged the inclusion of the ancient Indian sport, which promotes physical and mental health, in the Asian Games, an IOA press release said.

A press release issued by the IOA said, “The 10th International Day of Yoga was celebrated on June 21 all over the world. People in various countries have embraced yoga and reaped its benefits. India is the spiritual home of Yoga and the Vishwaguru. Hence, India will participate in the Asian Games and subsequent Olympics.” I’m sure we can campaign for the inclusion of the game.

Yoga as a sport is a very attractive proposition for broadcasters. Yoga is a part of the Gallo India Games. Seeing its success, the organizers of the National Games in Goa included yoga, including mallakamp and yogasanas, as part of the programme. I am sure that the Olympic Council of Asia will find good reason to accept my proposal.

The Louvre Museum in Paris will offer visitors the chance to take part in yoga sessions with instructors ahead of next month’s Olympics. So it is a pleasure to welcome Lowrey Yoga. It is our responsibility to get this sport recognized in the Asian Games and Olympic Games.

Adding yoga to the Asian Games would be the first step towards taking the sport to the Olympics, Union Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya told me. Our domestic sports should be on such platforms,” said IOA President Dr PT Usha.
